The first of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House books, Little House in the Big Woods, was copyrighted on August 6, 1932.  Written with the help of her daughter Rose, Little House in the Big Woods is the story of Laura’s early childhood in Pepin, Wisconsin.  For narrative reasons, Laura was made slightly older (five rather than three) but the events closely parallel her life at the time.

In 1932, Laura received her first royalty check of $500 (around $8,000 in today’s money) from Harper and Brothers.  By the mid-1930s, the Little House books were a steady source of income for Laura and Almanzo, allowing them to live in dependable comfort for the first time in their married lives.

Shown above are different editions of Little House in the Big Woods: a first US edition, a US edition with a cover by Garth Williams, a current Spanish edition, a current Greek edition, a 1974 French edition, a 1982 Hungarian edition, and a current Korean edition.  The Garth Williams covers and illustrations were created in 1953 for a unified set of the best selling Little House books.  Garth’s illustrations were very popular and many foreign editions use his covers and illustrations, only changing the text.
